Many will be disappointed to learn that Back 4 Blood does not feature a campaign versus mode. However, there is a versus PvP mode if you want to test your skills against other players. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, who also developed the Left 4 Dead series, Back 4 Blood is an FPS that has you going up against a bunch of zombies called the Ridden. While the game does a lot to improve on the foundation laid down by Left 4 Dead, a campaign versus mode is one of the features that never made the jump from Left 4 Dead to Back 4 Blood.
Does Back 4 Blood Campaign Versus
Unfortunately, Back 4 Blood does not have a campaign versus mode. According to Chris Ashton, who is a co-founder of Turtle Rock Studios, removing the campaign versus mode was a deliberate decision. As Chris Ashton explains, Back 4 Blood features a lot of defensive equipment. Hence, defending works much better than running from point A to B.
While Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, the lack of a campaign versus mode illustrates that the game does not merely mimic its predecessors, but instead tries to inject some innovation into its gameplay.
What Are The Alternatives
Although a campaign versus mode is absent from Back 4 Blood, you can still have fun going against other human-controlled enemies.
Back 4 Blood offers a 4v4 PvP versus mode. In this mode, your team sets up fortification around a small chunk of the map and prepares themselves to go up against hordes of Ridden. The goal is to survive for as long as you can. Others can play as one of the special zombie types. The playable special Ridden types include Tallboys, Reekers, and Stingers. The Ridden are tasked with killing the Cleaners as quickly as possible.
While this is quite different from what Left 4 Dead offers, you still get the opportunity to have your team compete with other human-controlled teams.
Back 4 Blood launches on the 12th of October 2021. However, those who purchased the Ultimate Edition of the game have early access. It is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
