While most of the mainline Mario games have done something different from the games that came before, it looks like Nintendo will be doing something with the next game to shake up the formula even more.

In a new interview with IGN, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said that “We’re always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you’ll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two. Maybe next E3 we’ll be able to share something.”

However, he goes on to note the difficulty in tweaking the Mario formula too much, because the accessibility of the games is what makes them so easily enjoyable. He said that “It’s kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those game.”

The last major game in the Mario series was last year’s Super Mario Maker for Wii U, which allowed players to create their own Mario levels from a tool set taken from several of the games and share them with others.
