Gearbox officially ceases development on Battleborn; servers to stay online

Battleborn may be one of the unluckiest video games to release this generation. After bad sales, middling reviews and even turning into an unsuccessful free-to-play title, Battleborn has officially ended development.

Announced by the game’s creative director Randy Varnell, Battleborn is finally settling into an early grave with no future content planned for the FPS/MOBA hybrid after the game’s upcoming Fall update.

“As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall update,” said Varnell on the official Gearbox forums. “Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on.”

Varnell goes on to state that Battleborn’s servers will continue to remain online for any dedicated fans who’re still having fun playing the game. There will still be a very tiny skeleton crew working on keeping the game running as well as providing any much-needed hotfixes, but for the most part this marks the end of Battleborn’s development period.

That’s quite disheartening to hear actually as Gearbox’s attempt to break into the hero shooter genre wasn’t a bad go for a first try. Although, seeing as Overwatch was just around the corner and the market being crowded enough already–see the terrible concurrent players for Cliff Blezinski’s Lawbreakers–Battleborn just wasn’t a big enough game to compete in a sea of similar looking shooters; a lesson Cliffy B should learn from.
