Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 was one of Ubisoft’s biggest releases this past year, serving as a solid sequel to the original. Ubisoft has had plans to expand beyond just the game industry with this franchise though, with a movie previously being announced and they had some big news to reveal about the project at E3 2019.
Ubisoft held their E3 2019 conference this afternoon and featured a lot of information about not only The Division 2, but also games like Watch Dogs Legion and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. They also moved beyond gaming with new information about Tom Clancy’s The Division movie information.
It was previously revealed that Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal were going to be starring in the movie, which were definitely two major gets for the movie as two of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Ubisoft’s big reveal during the presentation today though was that Netflix had acquired the rights to The Division movie.
This means that rather than a theatrical run, The Division movie will instead be coming exclusively to Netflix. This news can be seen as both a good and bad thing. The good news is that the likelihood of the movie actually happening is probably higher, as theatrical movies tend to get in development hell a lot more often. However, this also means the movie will not be a big budget spectacle either that could have been enjoyed best on a big screen otherwise.
Either way, we’ll have to see if The Division can continue the trend of solid video game movies that we’ve seen that have included Tomb Raider, Rampage, and most recently Detective Pikachu.
